Detail of a blood vessel with a low viral load: when taking HIV medicines a bit of HIV virus remains in the blood, but can no longer attack the white blood cells that protect against infections.

Viral load

Amount of HIV in the blood. If the viral load is high, HIV can more easily be passed on to others. Medicines lowers the viral load, but the virus never disappears completely.

Virale lading
